Edra introduce the Barbarian Collection at Milan Furniture Fair 2010 | CHAPLINS FURNITURE

Monday, May 17th, 2010 by jamespress

edra_milan_furniture_fair_2010_01
Barbarians

This is the theme of edra’s 2010 collection, curated by Art Director Massimo Morozzi. A tribute to the Barbarians who with passion and drive, fresh blood and daring, descended from the furthest outposts to occupy the heartland of the Western world, marking the end of the classical era and the beginning of the modern era.

The project explores the twin themes of natural materials and colours with equal passion and energy, sharing the same blood and daring as the Barbarians, on a quest to conquer land, fire and forests, and using matter as the design matrix.

Like the raffia featured in the Cabana storage unit, the aluminium of the Campana lamp, the terracotta of the Cotto table and the natural hide of the Brenno sofa. Or the materials used to cover the new Sponge, Attila and Leather Works designs.

A meaningful and well thought out choice, reflecting the determination of a barbarian horde, with no hesitation and no turning back. The results are strong, spirited and overwhelmingly natural.

edra_brenno
BRENNO
Francesco Binfaré - 2010
Artfully worked natural leather gives the sofa a softly indulgent appearance. The frame is in plywood and metal and the stuffing is in Gellyfoam covered with a thick layer of goose down. The leather upholstery is generously plump by design, affording the kind of welcoming softness and comfort that appeases the eye even before the body.

edra_cotto
COTTO
Fernando Campana & Humberto Campana - 2010
The frame and legs are in stainless steel and the top is supported by a thick sheet of aluminium. Eight large, randomly shaped pieces of treated, finely textured terracotta form the table top. Each section is stamped underneath with the words “Made in Italy” and “hand made”. The Cotto table is ideal for indoor and outdoor use, its shape and materials placing the design light years away from the usual stereotypes.

edra_campana
CAMPANA
Fernando Campana & Humberto Campana - 2010
The lampshade is assembled out of around 180 variously shaped pieces of laser-cut glossy anodised aluminium. Each piece is absolutely one of a kind, as the shapes are attached quite randomly, and positioned in no particular order, so each lampshade is unique. The Campana suggests the form of the object inspiring it, but in a lightweight, ecosustainable metal, aluminium, which can be recycled an infinite number of times with no loss of quality. The light source in the centre is ideal for illuminating table-tops and interiors.

edra_cabana
CABANA
Fernando Campana & Humberto Campana - 2010
A storage unit arranged around a central column supporting five shelves: the structure, in aluminium and other metals, is entirely concealed by dangling lengths of fire-proofed raffia.

edra_scrigno
SCRIGNO
Fernando Campana & Humberto Campana - 2009/10
Stand-alone cupboard, sideboards and drawers. Every visible surface is clad in shiny splinters of laser-cut Reflex, a reflective acrylic material in gold, silver and other colours.

Quaderna, the successful series designed by Superstudio in 1970 celebrates 40 years | CHAPLINS FURNITURE

Thursday, February 11th, 2010 by jamespress

zanotta_quaderna

Quaderna, the successful series designed by Superstudio in 1970 and produced without interruption by Zanotta, celebrates 40 years.

A collection-manifesto of “radical design” active between Florence, Rome, Naples and Milan in the late ’60s.

Quaderna represents with its history the visionary utopias of that time. As Franco Raggi asserts in his writing “Radical Story” (Casabella, 1973), the radical movement tries to “overcome the disciplinary discourse of  design, namely the reconstruction of the contradictions at the formal level, destroying …the normal image of the product.” The result is an avant-garde style that provokes, on one side, and creates solicitations for the contemporary world, on the other.

With Quaderna, the Superstudio group of Florence (Adolfo Natalini, Cristiano Toraldo di Francia, Frassinelli and Magris brothers) creates an endless world of objects to be invented, ranging from flat surface, to furniture, to architecture. Everything starts in ‘69 with the “Histograms” designed by Natalini and companions: objects built on the base of  spatial lattice orthogonal grid, endlessly adaptable. A family of unique and timeless furniture takes shape, an icon based on regular geometric shapes covered with squared white laminate (created on purpose by Abet Print, designed by Superstudio, and called Misura) and characterized by strict volumes, simple and perfect.  A real “artificial landscape” extensible as you wish, neutral and strong at the same time: a single squared top “with legs” that becomes a table and space, as well as a chair, bed, bench, cabinet, stool.

Zanotta decides to put Quaderna  into production in 1971, with the courage of those who have always wanted  to experiment. And with the flair of whom constantly anticipates:  “the neo-modern and post-modern wave” that will follow with Alchymia and Memphis enters the stage between  the ’70s and the ’80s.

Quaderna, of which Zanotta  still manufacturers table, desk, console table and bench, has received numerous awards and is exhibited in the major museums of the world as timeless pieces of pure design.
