5 Romantic Getaways for Contemporary Design Lovers

5 Romantic Getaways for Contemporary Design Lovers

In 2019, how does one say I love you on Valentines Day? Should you spell it out in a flower wall a là Kanye and Kim? Or broadcast it to your followers on IGTV? At Chaplins, we recommend escaping the corniness altogether with a romantic getaway to one of these stunning design destinations. A mixture of secluded country estates and buzzy city hotels, each offers an indulgent programme that will help even the most seasoned of lovebirds relight the fire.

1) The Lakes By Yoo, Cotswolds

Nestled over 850 acres of freshwater lakes and woodland, Lakes By Yoo is far from your average Cotswolds retreat.  Clustered around the lakes’ Azur shores are a selection of luxurious homes which vary in size from a traditional family lodge to the impressive Lakeshore Villa. The impeccable houses are adorned from to head-to-toe in designer furniture, with B&B Italia sofas and Zanotta armchairs ensuring unparalleled comfort in every room. When not relaxing indoors, guests can choose to sail, fish, or make their way down to the world-class spa on site. There’s also a thriving kids club for those travelling as a family but craving a little alone time with their partner.

2) Sea Containers Hotel, South Bank, London

Boasting dazzling views of the South Bank and St Paul’s Cathedral, Sea Containers is a must-stay luxury hotel in the heart of the capital. Designed entirely by Tom Dixon, it radiates an electric energy, with every surface and finish chosen to invite a curious caress. However, the real fun takes place in the 12th Knot Rooftop bar, where glamorous patrons sip cocktails on Beetle Lounge Chairs under the twinkling illumination of Moooi’s Raimond Pendant Lights. If panoramic city views and a short walk to the Tate Modern sound like you, then this design destination is right up your street. Just be sure to book before the 28th February to take advantage of their “Do Not Disturb” offer (a bottle of champagne, complimentary upgrade (subject to availability), welcome amenity and a delicious breakfast for two).

3) Bvlgari Hotel, Knightsbridge, London

Chic, dark and mysterious, Bulgari’s London Hotel reveals Antonio Citterio at his very best. Upon entering the black and gold lobby, there’s an immediate impression of high-Italian glam, maintained throughout the hotel with glossy Sapele mahogony and lashings of leather. The suites are seductive yet sophisticated, a look achieved thanks to the black velvet Febo Chairs and the powerful lines of Maxalto’s Pathos Tables. It’s the kind of glamorous retreat in which you feel utterly transported, a sense that’s only heightened by the dramatic 25-metre private pool buried beneath Central London’s bustling streets. Complete with an award-winning spa and fabulous restaurant, it’s the ideal hideaway for urban cosmopolitans who fancy an indulgent weekend without having to hop on a plane.

4) Cowley Manor, Cotswolds

When guests first arrive at Cowley Manor, the first thing they notice is the grand Italianate exterior. The second is the bold, iconic interiors that define every room within this stylish spa hotel. Through a selection of timeless yet modern furniture, the hotel establishes a luxurious but distinctly comfortable vibe — the kind of place where you can dress glamorously if you want to but a suit a tie isn’t required. The dining room’s spectacular garden views can be admired from the comfort of a Saarinen Tulip Dining Chair, expertly styled with a pared-back wood table. In the events room, you’ll find Kartell’s Masters Chair and in the garden, Vitra’s Vegetal and Tom Vac Dining Chairs. Light, modern and distinctly refreshing, Cowley Manor is a great choice for couples and families looking to unwind in the countryside with all of the comforts of home. This Valentines Day, couples can expect to indulge in afternoon tea, an award-winning spa, and revitalising walks through the Grade II listed grounds.

5) The Radisson Blu Hotel, Edinburgh

Occupying prime position on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile is the Radisson Blu Hotel. Its smooth brutalist facade is impossible to miss amid the ornate Georgian architecture of its neighbours and conceals a deeply design-conscious interior. Each of the suites have been playfully styled by a different Scottish designer, with Moooi and Fritz Hansen used to particular success. Colourful custom upholstery can be found throughout, establishing a quirky yet comfortable atmosphere. The vivacious scheme continues right the way through to the Italian restaurant where Artemide’s Nur Pendant bathes diners in a wash of atmospheric pink light. Just a stone’s throw away from all of Edinburgh beloved attractions (Calton Hill, Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace) it’s the ideal base for discovering everything the city has to offer.
