There is perhaps no item of contemporary design so loved or well known as the Panton Dining Chair. Its sinuous curves came into production in 1967, breaking records as the first all-plastic cantilevered chair to be manufactured in one piece. It represented the promise and progress of the era, a flourishing Europe whose design culture was second to none.
Panton was deeply moved by the futuristic finishes of the time, incorporating mirrored or reflective finishes in many of his other designs. He long hankered to reproduce this finish on the Panton Dining Chair, however, the sensitivity of such a surface to scratching was an insurmountable technical obstacle at that time. 50 years later, it is with great pleasure that Vitra has launched the Limited Edition Panton Chrome Dining Chair. It marks a poignant realisation of Panton’s initial vision, made possible by a complex coating system and 21st-century tech.
Materials & Finishes
The dazzling mirrored effect of Panton Chrome is the result of a metallisation process, in which metal particles are embedded in multiple layers of varnish. This complex coating system is resilient enough to cope with the slight movement of the cantilever chair when in use while being sufficiently robust to protect the sensitive surface.
