Yellow Is The New Black: Summer Interior Trends

The colour yellow can be many things. For some, it speaks of sun, deserts and glistening riches. For others, the promise of spring, with its peeping daffodils and soft light. In interiors, it’s become somewhat of a secret weapon, acting as both a visual anchor and energizing accent. In this week’s blog, we take a trip down the yellow brick road, stopping to admire its various shades as well as providing tips and tricks on how you can style it at home. We’ll also reveal our sunny summer steals, now available with up to 15% off in the Chaplins Summer Sale.

Mustard Moments

Piquant and confident, mustard yellow is a surprisingly versatile hue. A deep golden yellow with grey undertones, it’s neither shouty nor ostentatious and can easily be matched with many different shades. In a neutral scheme, it provides an immediate injection of life (see Ligne Roset‘s Togo Sofa in the main slider). Whereas when paired with black it becomes seductive and rich — a deep and delicious tone that will transition well into winter. At once a statement and a stabiliser, it’s a great colour choice for modern sofas or dining chairs, with velvet helping to draw out its sense of opulence.

Yummy Yellow

Yummy yellow incorporates a variety of soothing, lightweight tones ideal for homes that seek a gentle immersion of colour. It can be used more sparingly than mustard and is what we’d refer to as a gateway colour, allowing you to build a bigger picture with greys, pinks and blues. However, it can have just as much impact on a statement armchair if you’ll let it (see B&B Italia’s Metropolitan Chair for proof). For lovers of Scandi style, it’s a great way to add warmth to traditionally neutral schemes.

Zest Is Best

Zesty yellow oozes freshness, its green undertones infusing a typically warm hue with a revitalizing zing. It does much the same in interiors, adding a sharp and modern twist to contemporary schemes. As such, it’s often paired with white, although it does also go fantastically well with rich dark woods (Porada have upholstered much of their Canaletta Walnut collection for years in this hue). The key for this potent shade is to pair it with natural finishes such as wicker, rattan or wood, all of which will conspire to create a truly Zen and refreshing space.

Opulent Amber

Opulent yellow harbors ambitions of eternity and leans toward the amber end of the colour spectrum. Whether used as a lining for a glamorous bar cabinet or riven through creamy ceramic tabletops, it reveals yellow’s deeply luxurious potential. We advise using it little and often in collaboration with polished gold metals as an accent for your entire living room.
