Central Beds
Central Beds
Bedroom: bed backed against the wall, tables either side, add accoutrements, done. Right? Wrong. For AW23, beds are on the move, floating away from the wall and into the centre of the room thanks to contemporary designs which make the bed something of its own island.
The bed 2.0 is a look-at-me all-around sculptural centrepiece. Departing from conventional flush-to-the-wall placement gives beds space to breathe and be appreciated more fully as a design object, as they can be walked around and admired from all angles.

"My bedroom is my sanctuary. It's like a refuge, and it's where I do a fair amount of designing - at least conceptually, if not literally." - Vera Wang

Bedding Down
Contemporary bed design has stepped up to the need to be seen from 360-degrees, with headboards and frames carving slices from the air to conjure movable bedrooms- within-bedrooms. Bed frames are becoming integrated with other items such as lighting or tables to form compact sleep zones, while modern mattresses are gathered around by oversized headboards to create cosy sleeping nooks.
In recent years, headboards have been evolving into larger, more experimental, and bolder design statements – the final act is for them to become three-dimensional and dual sided, functioning as a backrest and support as well as a room dividing screen, shading sleepers from the door and creating a divide between the bed and other areas within the bedroom, which can come to form other spaces for lounging, working or walking.
