Curved Cabinetry
Curved Cabinetry
Curved edges have been taking over the home for the last few years. Circular forms are endlessly appealing – their touch-me roundness lacks alarming, shin-bashing, bruise-making angles and sharpness, while curvaceous forms promote a feeling of flow and fluidity in the home as well as providing physical softness.
Whereas upholstered furniture adapted swiftly to the vogue for curvature, harder materials took longer to catch up – with cool and creative consequences. Storage pieces such as cabinetry, drawers and desks are rounding their corners and edges, creating curved contours and soft sides.

A Round About Way
There is a clear downside to adding roundness to a hard storage object – the loss of inner space taken by pulling in and smoothing over the edges. But it is oh-so worth it. Bring a curvy cabinet or arcing wardrobe into a room and the mood instantly switches from practical to luxurious, conventional to cutting edge. These pieces are beautiful, the eye glides off their curvature, and crafted for visual delight and appreciation – as well as to put to use.
Often incorporating natural materials such as wood, stone or leather, smooth storage furniture have an almost organic feel to them. Did they grow, or sprout from a designer’s mind? Did the forest cultivate them, or a skilled craftsperson?
