AW TRENDS 2024

Harmonising Hues

While we were a bit tempted to try colour drenching, something in the back of our minds warned us it might not be around for that long – well, the answer is here with colour layering: the demure, delicate cousin of drenching who is passionate about pigment but doesn’t need the whole world to know.

The sophisticated, chic way to get the whole room kaleidoscopically infused, colour layering is where you take one – or several – colours and apply them to a space in a range of shades, tone, textures, materials and shapes. Such variation creates a rich and nuanced colour story which is both peaceful and visually intriguing.

Start with a base colour on a larger object (or wall) to set the mood – it doesn’t need to be bright, dark or pale shades work well, too – then layer in complementary hues. Get every item in the room involved from furniture to rugs, lighting and accessories for increased impact and to create a multi-dimensional celebration of colour. Just make sure the tone variations all belong to the same family and look harmonious with each other.

Alongside different shades of colour, it’s important to consider texture – contrasting surfaces from the rough and matte to the glossy and smooth are the pieces that will add the real depth to the space and enhance the colour narrative.

The final effect is an area that feels cohesive, sophisticated, and tranquil, the varying shades of colour adding interesting dimension without overwhelming the eye. The subtle variations in hues creates a synchronised and seamless space that’s clearly well- coordinated and thoughtfully designed. The continuous flow of colour blurs the boundaries in the room, creating a unified and calming atmosphere, while the easy addition of texture and pattern adds interest and richness.
