Paper Folds and Forms

Furniture taking inspiration from the humble piece of paper is emerging, be the designs origami-style, playing with the folds and twists of paper sheets, or having paper-cut-out elements to them. One thing is clear this furniture season – it’s time to get out your A4 and scissors.

Paper-inspired forms are seeing a rise in 2D-esque experimental approaches to furniture construction, from Ron Arad’s sculptural One Page chair and footstool for Moroso which was conceived when considering the curves of a single piece of paper, to Tiziano Guardini and Luigi Ciuffreda’s Narinari chair for B&B Italia: back and seat seemingly folding together origami-like. Meanwhile Lema’s Blanca armchair by Roberto Lazzeroni appears to be composed of shapely cut out pieces, leaving a gaping recess in the back, while Gallotti & Radice’s H2O chair by Studiopepe is decorated with a circle cut out from its backrest, and the brand’s Selce-T table – also by Studiopepe – comprises of cut-and-stick-style fragmented shapes.
