West London Villa

Project Spotlight

When we think of the service we provide, we like to imagine a place where we can unite a cohort of interior design's finest furniture under one roof and use the result as a monument to beautiful homes. Our favourite type of project is one in which we get to display the many brands we have personal and longstanding relationships with, and this beautiful West London space captures that perfectly.

We sat down with founder & CEO Andrew Hodgkinson of Hodgkinson Design, whom we worked closely with on the project, to talk about the space, the pieces and most importantly the process of working together to bring about a luxury space that met the needs and desires of the end client.

Thanks for joining us, Andrew. I want to start by asking how do you approach a project that has fairly limited space but the desire for sculptural designs?

"We control the areas of density to make the circulation routes clear and easy, with sculptural elements taking centre stage."

Was it easy to combine the various brands into one project and still maintain a consistent style?

"If I can use a metaphor, we want an orchestra of furniture and lighting not a single instrument."

"If I can use a metaphor, we want an orchestra of furniture and lighting not a single instrument."

The overhead lighting changes style from room to room, each carrying their own specific abstract personality, is there a reason you went for this mix and match approach?

"We like the dynamic impact of different lighting changes and want to enjoy the changes that creates."

Which part of this project posed the hardest obstacle to overcome throughout the design & installation process?

"Technically very high spec. A wolf in sheep’s clothing on the M+E side."

The home contains an abundance of directional lighting, abstract ceiling lights and, of course, copious natural light. Is it important to have a mix of all three?

"Lighting all does different ‘jobs.' We have them on separate circuits so that we can create different atmospheres."

Did working with our Chaplins trade team make the job a smoother process?

"Knowledgeable. Professional. Responsive. We have worked with them on a number of projects successfully."

Did the client come to you with a specific brief or was there a lot of creative freedom in your design choices?

"A broad idea that had to be developed. This is a busy house for a family that love to entertain but also need quiet spaces for working and homework."

Have you got a favourite piece that made it into the project?

"For me the Beam Coffee Table by Van Rossum. Strong, simple, natural and elegant."

Speaking of lighting, the style changes from room to room, each carrying their own specific abstract personality, is there a reason you went for this mix-and-match approach?

"We like the dynamic impact that different lighting provides depending on the mood of the room. And want to enjoy the character that each one emits."
