Grace Lounge Chair

Inspired by the sinuous shapes found in nature, the Grace Chair is a compilation of curves. It comprises a circular seat atop a slightly larger, offset, circular base, with an embracing backrest populated with long loops of rattan. A lost and found design from the archives of legendary Danish designer, Tove Kindt-Larsen, it promises to infuse interiors with a soft, bohemian feel.

Product Description

The Grace Chair by Danish architect and designer Tove Kindt-Larsen (née Reddersen, 1906-1994) is an elegant take on an informal typology new to the GUBI Collection – the rattan lounge chair. Woven by hand, the curvilinear, organic frame holds an indulgently deep seat cushion and a loose back pillow for added comfort. Bringing to life a design never before put into production, GUBI has worked closely with Tove Kindt-Larsen’s family to develop the piece from a conceptual sketch she drew in 1936, which was recently discovered in an archived folder of her jewellery designs.

The frame of the chair is entirely crafted by hand from rattan with its ‘skin’ left intact. It is steamed to make it more pliable and then coaxed into shape, before being held in a jig as it cools. The woven ‘skirt’ around the seat cushion adds strength and stability and then nothing more than natural bindings made from the rattan’s skin and a few screws are added to hold everything in place. Rattan skills were perfected in the 20th century by the Danish Reeds Guild, but are no longer prevalent in Denmark. Today, the chair is made by Indonesian artisans close to where rattan is grown, utilising their design insights and craft skills and avoiding the carbon footprint associated with transporting materials over long distances. This, combined with the fact rattan is very fast-growing and climbs up the trunks of trees, incentivizing responsible forest management, makes it a very sustainable choice.

Materials & Finishes

The flexibility of rattan – its ability to be bent and shaped at will – is at the heart of Tove Kindt-Larsen’s vision for the Grace Chair. The rattan flexes under the weight of the sitter, adding another layer of support as it adapts to the contours of the body. The result is a daring balance of elegance and informality, resulting in a piece that will make a bold statement as it casts playful shadows across any interior space. A sustainable alternative to wood, rattan is ideal for those looking for a beautiful chair with stellar eco-credentials.
