Product Information
Description
As a rising figure of the modernist movement, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was selected to design the German Pavilion for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona.
Through masterful proportioning and planning, Mies created a rhythmic and entirely unprecedented space, which elevated industrial-age materials to a level of grace never before achieved. Inside, Mies included chairs and stools conceived as a resting place for the King and Queen of Spain. Determined to create a chair worthy of royalty, Mies is thought to have based the designs, with their signature crisscross frames, on the campaign chairs of Ancient Rome. Mies: “I feel that it must be possible to harmonize the old and new in our civilization.”Although the Barcelona Pavilion only stood for seven months, it is recognized as a defining achievement of modern architecture, as are the accompanying Barcelona Chairs (although the King and Queen reportedly never sat in them).
Mies, a close friend and mentor to Florence Knoll during her time at the Illinois Institute of Technology, formally granted Knoll the production rights to the Barcelona Chair and Stool in 1953. The designs immediately became a signature of the Knoll brand and have been built to Mies van der Rohe’s exacting standards ever since.Need a second opinion? Our design experts can assist with everything from swatches to sizing to pricing. -

Price Promise
Our Price Promise
We know that price is important. And while all of our designs follow the recommended retail prices (RRP) from our suppliers, we’re determined never to be bested.
It’s why we decided to introduce our Chaplins Price Promise. A guarantee to try and match the price of a branded product should you find it on sale at another authorised UK retailer. While the offer only applies to new designs (rather than clearance, outlets or ex-display) it’s our way of showing that we don’t just offer the best in service or style, but are committed to competitive pricing, too.
Please click on the button below should you wish to query a price. If a competitor's offer isn't immediately apparent online, we may ask you to supply us with a written quotation from the retailer — just to confirm the details.
And remember, Chaplins newsletter subscribers get an exclusive first order discount when they sign up. All of the details of which you can find in the footer below.
Designer Profile
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, or Mies for short, was one of the bright sparks that set Europe in motion. He was the last official director of the Bauhaus School of the Arts, a seminal school for design, art and craft that is responsible for coining what is commonly referred to today as “industrial style”. Using innovative materials of industry, Mies and his colleagues invited clean lines and unhurried construction into the home, replacing the stuffy styles of yesteryear with powerful new icons of modernity. Today, they look just as contemporary as ever, almost 100 years after their creation.
