Designed as a pivoting wall lamp for the 'Maison Tropical', Potence is regarded as one of Jean Prouvé's puristic masterpieces. The fascination of this luminaire, which is over two metres long and dimmable, stems from the spareness of its materials and forms.

      Description

The Potence wall lamp is one of Jean Prouvé's puristic masterpieces. Reduced to the essentials – a light bulb and a pivoting wall mount – the long swing arm wall light is made of powder-coated tubular steel with an oakwood handle. The lamp is controlled by a cord dimmer and comes equipped with a light bulb.

Jean Prouvé created the first version of the Potence wall lamp in the 1940s for his own home in Nancy: a simple light bulb affixed to a long, pivoting steel bar, which is held by a steel wire. This functionalist, puristic design was soon produced in various sizes, with an added handle on larger models to facilitate the swivel movement.

    • Price Promise

      Our Price Promise

We know that price is important. And while all of our designs follow the recommended retail prices (RRP) from our suppliers, we’re determined never to be bested.

It’s why we decided to introduce our Chaplins Price Promise. A guarantee to try and match the price of a branded product should you find it on sale at another authorised UK retailer. While the offer only applies to new designs (rather than clearance, outlets or ex-display) it’s our way of showing that we don’t just offer the best in service or style, but are committed to competitive pricing, too.

Please click on the button below should you wish to query a price. If a competitor's offer isn't immediately apparent online, we may ask you to supply us with a written quotation from the retailer — just to confirm the details.

And remember, Chaplins newsletter subscribers get an exclusive first order discount when they sign up. All of the details of which you can find in the footer below.

    Designer Profile

    Jean Prouve

Jean Prouve was born in France, he was brought up in an artistic environment as his father Victor Prouve collaborated with the great Art Nouveau artist Emile Galle and Louis Majorelle as a ceramist. Jean Prouve became a metal-smith before enrolling in the engineering school of Nancy.

His personal knowledge of metal founded the base of his career. As a matter of fact, once he created his workshop in 1923, he became famous for producing contemporary metal furniture with a particular design of his own. He collaborated with some of the most respected and famous French designers of his time, Le Corbusier and Charlotte Perriand.
