As the design dust settles on our vibrant capital, it’s time we turned our attention to the new colour palettes and collections beckoning on the A/W 17 horizon. Think celestial lighting, interiors lined with velvet and the resurgence of earthy hues intended to stave off the cold. The Circle of Light

Light as eternal and all-encompassing is one of the season’s major themes, with lighting experts looking to looped and circular silhouettes to bring radiance into their homes. The current vogue valorises delicate, celestial lighting, updating a design concept first explored by Verner Panton with his Moon Pendant Light.

The Setareh collection by Fontana Arte is a poetic family of lighting that embodies this trend perfectly. Available as a contemporary table lamp or modern suspension light, their molecular structure replicates the serene beauty of all living things. A soft exposed bulb is entwined between concentric loops, the play of circular masses and trajectories reminiscent of a gentle moon and its orbit.

Illuminating the staircase at Design Junction was the equally striking Circus Light by Resident. Each brass hoop shares power with the one below, presenting a glorious achievement in LED technology. Rings can be added as desired to create a visually exciting vertical pendant light suitable for homes of all sizes.

A Study in Scarlet

While pink is still queen of the colour wheel, the prevalence of red on the catwalks suggests that this rich and dramatic hue will be more widely incorporated over the next year. As a powerful colour, we recommend incorporating red in small, concentrated doses to avoid upsetting the dynamic of your other autumnal hues. This could be a simple as opting for a red trim on Bonaldo’s Frame Sideboard or a stylish Boss Barstool from Cattelan Italia. Crushing on Velvet

Velvet has long been associated with luxury and elegance, with Maxalto and Porada recommending it as the upholstery for the iconic Febo series and Ziggy bed. However, its adoption by a variety of Scandinavian and Dutch designers in recent years has given this lustrous fabric an entirely new look, and designers at London Fashion Week were quick to hop on the trend for “innovative velvet“.

It all began with Gubi, whose bestselling Beetle Chair brought newfound glamour to the anatomically fascinating insect. Thin tapered legs support a wonderfully round and sculpted body, an image playfully reinterpreted by the comforting velvet chair. Moooi were quick to follow suit, releasing the Amami Sofa, an elegant and airy velvet sofa that re-imagines Old Hollywood glamour for a modern audience.

The hot pick in velvet for AW/17 is the limited edition Series 7 by Fritz Hansen. Arne Jacobsen’s classic dining chair has been given a theatrical makeover courtesy of German based fashion brand, Lala Berlin. This season’s earthy hues, tobacco, maple and terracotta, find themselves revived by lively accent colours. From pops of zingy yellow and primrose pink through to navy peony and grenadine red, these energetic hues add a touch of piquancy to the seasonal colour story. This playful approach to the autumnal palette welcomes back the practice of colour blocking to create interiors that are visually enticing and emotionally evocative.
